Principal

Dr. Dana Hawes joins Essex County Public Schools following two and a half decades of service to marginalized youth as an award-winning teacher and instructional leader in public and private schools in the Greater Richmond Metro Area.
Previously, as an instructor for the Department of Correctional Education, Dana taught English and Pre-GED to young men adjudicated to the Department of Juvenile Justice. In addition to serving as principal of alternative schools in Richmond and Henrico County Public Schools, he was also principal of a Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Northern Virginia.
Dr. Hawes comes to us from Greensville County Public Schools where he led Greensville County High School to full accreditation and then served as the first principal of The Refocus Center.
He has earned a Master’s and Post-Master’s in Educational Leadership from Walden and the George Washington University, respectively. He earned his Educational Doctorate and his BA in English and Mass Communications from Virginia State University. Dr. Hawes is a proud combat veteran of the United States Army.
